Adobe Target Profile Scripts and Attributes
Adobe Target profile scripts are best used for small, reusable visitor-level decisions that Target must evaluate consistently across activities. They are not a general data transformation layer. Before creating one, define its source values, update trigger, persistence requirement, consumers, default state, and owner.
An attribute without that contract can remain on a profile long after the team forgets how it was produced.
Distinguish attribute sources
Target can evaluate request parameters, profile parameters, built-in visitor context, and attributes shared through supported integrations. A request value describes the current interaction; a profile value can influence later requests. That difference determines whether a rule represents “is viewing this category now” or “has viewed this category before.”
Use stable names and document data types. A value sent as "10" may behave differently from a numeric value in comparisons. Normalize enumerations such as market, tier, and login state at the source where possible.
Do not send sensitive or unrestricted personal data simply because profile storage is convenient. Apply consent, minimization, governance, and retention rules before the attribute reaches Target.
Keep scripts focused and deterministic
A useful script performs one understandable calculation: record the first qualifying visit, count a defined behavior, classify a known parameter, or retain the latest approved state. Keep branching shallow and defaults explicit.
Avoid hidden dependencies among several scripts unless they are documented and tested in execution order. Circular or timing-dependent logic makes activity qualification difficult to explain. If a calculation requires broad history, identity resolution, or several enterprise systems, compute it in the appropriate upstream platform and pass the result through a governed integration.
Treat missing data as a normal input. Decide whether the result should be false, unknown, empty, or unchanged. Those states should not accidentally qualify the same audience.
Design persistence deliberately
Ask when an attribute should start, update, and expire. A session intent signal should not become a permanent preference. Conversely, a durable membership attribute should not disappear merely because a browser session ended.
Identity matters. Anonymous and authenticated profiles may not have the same continuity, and shared devices can mix behavior. Test new visitors, returning visitors, login, logout, identity changes, cookie deletion, and cross-domain paths supported by the implementation.
For regional sites, do not persist inferred location as if it were a contractual market. Keep language preference, current location, residence, and servicing region separate because they drive different decisions.
Test with observable inputs and outputs
Create a test table containing initial profile state, request parameters, expected script result, audience qualification, and next-request behavior. Cover boundary values, absent parameters, wrong types, repeated requests, and reset behavior.
Use Target delivery diagnostics and browser network evidence to verify the parameter was sent before investigating the script. A script cannot calculate from a value that never reached Target. With Web SDK, follow the Target activities with Web SDK guide to inspect Edge requests and propositions.
Profile scripts can affect many activities. Test known consumers before changing a shared script, use naming and description conventions, and maintain rollback information. Do not repurpose an existing attribute with new semantics; create a clearly versioned replacement and migrate audiences deliberately.
Govern audiences and regional use
Document every script’s purpose, owner, input contract, output values, persistence, consent classification, and dependent activities. Periodically identify scripts with no active consumers and attributes whose source no longer exists.
Global teams should share common definitions for enterprise concepts such as customer tier while allowing market-specific attributes only where the business rule truly differs. Duplicating the same script for each country increases drift and makes cross-market QA harder.
Profile scripts should support targeting, not override legal exclusions. Consent and suppression controls need authoritative enforcement in the appropriate architecture.
Before publishing a change, list every audience and activity that reads the output and test representative existing profiles. State created by the previous logic may persist, so define whether it should be retained, recalculated, migrated, or allowed to expire. Release notes should describe semantic changes, not only script syntax.
Use a separate test script when production profile state must remain untouched.

Frequently asked questions
What is an Adobe Target profile script?
A profile script evaluates visitor and request context in Target and stores or derives a reusable profile value that can support audiences, activity qualification, and personalization.
How long do Target profile attributes last?
Persistence depends on the attribute source, visitor profile behavior, and implementation. Define the required lifetime explicitly and verify it with returning-visitor tests rather than assuming session or permanent storage.
Should business logic be placed in Target profile scripts?
Only logic that is appropriate for Target evaluation, explainable, and governed there. Enterprise eligibility, consent, and source-of-truth calculations may belong upstream and be passed as approved attributes.
